Starting 23/24 Season With A Splash

Published Fri 06 Oct 2023

Welcome to all new and returning members for the 2023/24 Water Polo Season!

It's that time of year as we all get back into the pool and gear up for the 2023/24 Water Polo season. Before we look ahead, let's celebrate the remarkable achievements of our State teams at the 2023 National State Championships and recognise the dedication of our clubs, especially those from regional areas, at the 2023 NSW State Festival.

NSW Dominates the National Stage

In a spectacular showcase of talent and determination, our New South Wales State teams triumphed at the 2023 National State Championships, bringing home an impressive three out of four National titles. It's a testament to the hard work, skill, and teamwork of our athletes, coaches, and supporters. Congratulations to all those who represented our State with pride!

It is an exciting time for many of our athletes who have gained selection into the National Age Group Program. They will be training and playing hard to earn their spot as part of an Australian Junior Team for the coming season.

Clubs Shine at the State Festival

Our water polo clubs are the lifeblood of our sport, and their commitment to developing athletes and officials is the core of the growth of our sport. The 2023 NSW State Festival provided a platform for clubs, including those based in regional areas, to shine. Clubs from metro, regional and interstate sent teams, supported by dedicated coaches and referees, showcasing the true spirit of our water polo community. The State Festival's fun and inclusive environment allowed for the growth of our sport and set the stage for the official season kick-off. What better way to kick off your teams season than playing half a seasons worth of games beforehand!

Exciting Development Opportunities

As we welcome new and returning members to the 2023/24 season, it has been non-stop with opportunities for some of our future stars!

The U13s skills development clinic, hosted at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre (SOPAC), was a resounding success. Young athletes had the opportunity to refine their skills under expert guidance, setting the stage for a promising future in water polo.

But that's not all; we're thrilled to announce additional development opportunities in partnership with the Sydney Catholic Schools and Kap7. Scott and his team have lead a two-day water polo development program for kids in the Catholic Schools System that has provided opportunity for kids to try our sport and for others to hone their skills. These initiatives aim to nurture talent, foster teamwork, and ignite a passion for the sport among a community who have potential to become one of our future members.

Finally WPNSW is stoked to have delivered the All Abilities Cerebral Palsy Alliance program, culminating with a training camp at the State Festival. The participants and coaches have been training and having a ball over 2 x 8 week training blocks and got to show off their new skills with games against the Barbarians and SNB.

We can't wait to see the program expand and grow! A big thank you to the NSW Office of Sport and Macquarie Sports for their support of this program.
